Diversity
The many discussions about race in 2020 inspired Brittany Kim and I to survey what Black Old Testament scholars had written. The project eventually turned into an online presence called Every Voice: A Center for Kingdom Diversity in Christian Theological Education that we created along with Andrew King.
The purpose statement of the organization is as follows: “At Every Voice we believe that Christian theological education should reflect the rich diversity of the global body of Christ. Since we serve a Triune God who seeks to reconcile people to himself and to one another, we work to cultivate a spirit of kingdom diversity and reconciliation within our academic institutions and societies. And with the conviction that everyone has been created in God’s image and therefore has something to contribute to the conversation, we emphasize the value of listening to all voices, especially those that have often been marginalized in the largely Western-dominated academy.”
The heart of the website is a database of works by minority and global scholars in a variety of areas related to Christian theological education, but we also have a variety of other endeavors, such as a book of the month giveaway, a student group, and a publishing partnership with Baker Academic.
One publication as a result of this work is an article I co-authored with Brittany Kim and Carmen Imes on the work of Black scholars on the book of Exodus: “Black Readings of Exodus” Currents in Biblical Research 23 (2024): 80–99.
